France’s Youngest Ever PM
In a bold move, French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed 34-year-old Gabriel Attal as France's youngest-ever prime minister.
Attal, who is also the country's first openly gay head of government, has replaced Elisabeth Borne.
Attal's appointment comes at a time when Macron's government is under pressure from an increasingly assertive far-right.
The new prime minister has promised "action, action, action," and is expected to bring new energy to the government.
Attal's most pressing task will be to ensure that Macron’s unpopular government is in a position to outperform the far-right National Rally party of Marine Le Pen.
Macron is relying on Attal to rejuvenate his government, in part, with an appeal to a younger demographic of voters who have become disillusioned.
Despite his youth, Attal is already popular with the public. His appointment has been seen as a strategic move by Macron to give new momentum to his presidency.
However, some heavyweight government figures aren’t happy about the dazzling rise of a man known among fellow ministers as “young Gabriel”.
